CARES: Colorectal Cancer Awareness, Research, Education & Screening

Designed to produce a toolkit (consisting of a photo novella and booklet and DVD) targeted for racially and ethnically diverse medically underserved population; and assessing the efficacy of the CARES toolkit on increased colorectal cancer screening uptake using the FIT kit (immunochemical fecal occult blood test-iFOBT) . Introducing FIT screening test to clinics (n=416) and produced screening rates of over 80%. The research study addresses disparities in colorectal cancer among populations attending community based clinics.

Outcomes:

-High screening uptake (81%) exceeding the clinics baseline screening rates (18%-35%), surpassing Healthy People 2020 target of 70% as well as CDC’s goal of 80%.

-21 abnormal FIT resolved,16 colonoscopies completed, 1 cancer found.

-Participating clinic partners adopted the use of a one-time FIT in their practice.

-Clinic partners became invested in utilizing these educational interventions which successfully promoted patients'’ screening performance in accordance with UDS benchmarks.

Community Partners Roles: Served on the community advisory board, assisted in the development of the educational materials, help operationalize research studies at clinics, facilitated recruitment strategies for accrual of patients, participated in publications, presentations and other dissemination research activities .

Biobanking: To improve biospecimen donation

Designed to develop and validate instruments to measure knowledge and attitudes towards biospecimen donation and banking, evaluate changes in attitudes toward Biobanking, knowledge of Biobanking and intentions to participate in a biobank. The creation of the English and Spanish language BANKS and Biomedical Research Trust Scale instruments addressed gaps in biospecimen science.

Outcomes:

-TBCCN DVD+ brochure intervention (educational communication priming tools) improved knowledge related to biospecimen donation and Biobanking (created in English & Spanish).

-Received requests for BANKS instruments and educational materials from other researchers interested in raising Biobanking awareness among diverse communities.

-A number of researchers has been able to build on the TBCCN Biobanking education intervention materials and processes to produce their own set of materials specifically foe their audience for a similar project.

Latinos-CARES (Colorectal Cancer Awareness, Research, Education & Screening)

Is a transcreation of the CARES study, designed to produce a toolkit (consisting of a photo novella booklet and DVD) targeted for medically underserved Latinos. The study assesses the efficacy of the Latinos toolkit on increased colorectal cancer screening uptake using the FIT Kit (immunochemical fecal occult blood test-iFOBT). Introducing FIT screening test to clinics (n=76) and produced screening rates of 87%. The research study addresses disparities among Latino populations attending community based clinics.

Outcomes:

-Designed a Latinos intervention (both booklet and DVD) that us easy to understand, salient, and culturally suitable for the Latinos population.

-Overall screening uptake is high (87%) which surpasses Healthy People 2020 target of 70% as well as Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC’s) goal of 80%.

-1 abnormal FIT, colonoscopy preformed, no cancers found.

Community Partners Roles: Served on the community advisory board, assisted in the development of the educational materials, facilitated recruitment strategies for accrual of patients, participated in publications, presentations and other dissemination research activities .

Cervical Cancer

Development of CCER Health Ambassador Project:

A train-the-trainer model was utilized to train local farmworker migrant women on the utilization of the TBCCN HPV/Cervical Cancer teaching cards as a means to educate other women on the importance of Pap screenings. These trained women, acted as ambassadors, and educated 60 women in their community about HPV and cervical cancer via charlas’ (talking circles).
